THE MASKS FALL AND WE LOOK BEHIND THE CURTAIN OF THE PERFORMING ARTS.

With its theme ‘World of the Stage’, EXEMPLAmünchen 2025 showed just how indispensable the craft of performing arts is. Whether stage sets, costumes or masks: visitors were able to take a look behind the scenes in lively workshops and marvel at the intricate detail work. They were transported to another world and experienced the magic of theatre first-hand at «Handwerk & Design».

THREE EXCITING AREAS PROVIDE A GLIMPSE BOTH IN FRONT OF AND BEHIND THE SCENES

Stage as a building

‘Stage as a structure’ presented outstanding projects such as the acoustic models by Georg Ackermann GmbH, stage constructions by Bühnenbau Wertheim and the electrical engineering and control systems by Zeiler-Technik GmbH. Virtual exhibits from the Deutsches Theatermuseum and the Deutsche Theatertechnische Gesellschaft illustrated stage history and architecture.

Stage design and scenery

‘Stage design and scenery’ provided insights into the work of the Bavarian State Opera and the Munich Kammerspiele, which created impressive stage worlds with technical precision. Marionette and paper theatre complemented the show and demonstrated filigree craftsmanship in smaller stage formats.

Costume and Mask

‘Costume and Mask’ allowed visitors to experience at first hand how costumes and masks were created. The Accademia Teatro alla Scala, the August Everding Theatre Academy and the Fachschule für Gewandmeister*innen were represented. In addition, four international mask artists, including NOH mask carver Kitazawa Hideta and jewellery artist Rasa Vilcinskaite, presented their unique works.
